AMLA 2026: The harmonized EU supervisory framework for anti-money laundering is taking shape – and what it means for banks across Europe.

The European Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA), headquartered in Frankfurt, started its work about a year ago. In 2026, the EU's AML/CFT Single Rulebook is becoming increasingly concrete, with new Regulatory Technical Standards (RTS), Implementing Technical Standards (ITS) and Guidelines that will materially change the day-to-day reality for obliged entities across the EU.

Timo Purkott, Partner at KPMG AG Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft in Frankfurt and Co-Lead of the international KPMG AMLA Office, has been following AMLA's development as an observer since its inception. In this video, he shares his perspective on the current state of play and explains why implementing the new AML requirements is not a one-time project, but a continuous transformation.

Key takeaways:

  • One year in, the harmonized EU supervisory framework for AML is clearly taking shape.

  • 2026 brings new requirements, new details and continuous change for banks and other obliged entities.

  • The rules are being harmonized – but the reality for regulated entities is becoming more complex, not simpler.

  • Waiting is expensive: those who delay lose time and, in the worst case, lose control of implementation.

  • Successful banks act now – systematically and step by step.

  • Implementing the new AML requirements is an ongoing transformation, not a one-off project.

Who should watch this video? Board members, Chief Compliance Officers, MLROs, Heads of Financial Crime, Risk and Compliance leaders in banks, insurers, asset managers and other obliged entities in Germany, Europe and globally.
